Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS)

PFPS is a disorder where pain is arising from the patella (kneecap) & that excludes other soft tissue. PFPS constitutes 16 to 25 % of all injuries in runners. The diagnosis is made clinically; thus, please consult a Doctor if you experience pain below the knee cap.

Symptoms :
  • Pain under the knee cap
  • Swelling around the knee joint
  • Increase of pain after activities like jumping, running (especially downslope), steps/stairs, Prolonged walking and Squatting



Causes :
  • Overuse
  • Abnormal tracking of patella
  • Biomechanical issues
  • Injury
  • Muscle imbalance or Weakness
  • Secondary to knee surgery
  • Ankle or hip instabilities
  • Poor core control
Physiotherapy at our centre includes :
  • 3D Gait Lab Analysis for Walking and Running Assessments to accurately detect normal and abnormal movement patterns which are causing or leading to an injury
  • Manual therapy and Soft tissue technique
  • Specific exercise program with Stretches and Strengthening
  • Taping / Guardian Rehabilitator brace for support and strength
  • Pain management with Electrical stimulation, Ultrasound, Cold Laser
  • Walking & Running retraining
